I knew that today was the National Day of Prayer and I have remembered it happening in previous years but I forgot how it got started and if there were main things to pray for?? So here and the answers to those questions. I have also included some of my favorite verses about prayer! Enjoy!
The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
You obviously can pray for whatever is on your heart but on this day you are also asked to remember the country in your prayers and prayer for the wisdom of it's leaders. That is probably not hard for many considering the events in the past couple of days.
Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
